AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT GROUP CLASSES

IMG_0491.jpg

Awareness Through Movement (ATM) is a ~6o minute class done in a group setting, offered In-Person or on Zoom. Each lesson highlights novel movement patterns and specific kinesthetic relationships to uncover/recall more possibilities in the way you organize yourself to better serve you in doing the things you want to do. Zoom classes are co-taught with Feldenkrais practitioner, Krista Langberg.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A FELDENKRAIS CLASS

ATM class most often takes place lying down, but occasionally in sitting or standing. I provide verbal proposals and guide learners as they move, but there is no demonstration. There is a strong emphasis on moving slowly, easily, and staying within the range of personal comfort so that you can refine your sense of what you are doing and how you are doing it. ATM is perhaps different from other movement classes in that its goals are not about stretching, strengthening, relaxing, meditating, or imitating. Instead lessons are designed to engage your curiosity in yourself and to refine your innate powers of awareness.

THE HABIT OF DESIRE

How do we know what we want? What governs our ability to choose? What in our organization has us acting from "should" rather than from what feels good?

These questions, though maybe not always obvious, are at the heart of Feldenkrais practice. We live in a noisy world that constantly tells us what to need, what to desire, what would make our lives better. Over time, we lose touch with a quieter, more innate sense of wanting; one that belongs to us alone.

In this six-week series, we'll focus our practice on the primary movements of flexion and folding as we slow down, dampen external noise, and attend more closely to our inner life. As we create more space to explore how sensation, habit, and choice are intertwined, perhaps we can also uncover desires that may have gone long unspoken. What emerges when we stop performing what we think we should want, and start listening for what we actually do?

FAQ

WHERE DO IN-PERSON CLASSES HAPPEN?

Classes and workshops are located at East Lake Aikido at 3359 36th Ave S located in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis, just across the street from Longfellow Park on the northwest corner.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

BY CAR: East Lake Aikido is located four blocks south of East Lake St and six blocks east of Minnehaha Av.

BY BUS: The nearest Metro Transit stop is right in front of the studio at E 34th St and 36th Ave S on the 9 line.

WHERE CAN I PARK?

There is plenty of free on-street parking near the studio.

IS EAST LAKE AIKIDO ACCESSIBLE?

East Lake Aikido is generally accessible though there is a slight one-inch rise to get from the floor onto the studio matts. Let me know if you have specific accessibility needs or requests.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

You can feel free to wear anything that is comfortable. Generally clothing that is not too loose or too tight is helpful. The temperature at the studio can be variable depending on the season and it can be helpful to wear or bring layers for your comfort. There is a bathroom for you to change clothes before and/or after class if you'd like.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING? DO I NEED A MAT?

The flooring at East Lake Aikido is made of firm but forgiving tatami mat which is a great surface for Feldenkrais. Most often people practice on a quilted moving blanket which are provided for you. Any other bolsters or props required for the lesson will also be provided for you. You are always welcome to bring your own mats, props, etc if you prefer.
